I have been trying to write a book for learning Portuguese for a long time, as I have found that many of the books do not seem to cater for the people that actually live here. People want to learn instantly,
which of course, is impossible, but there must be an easier way.
Many book focus far too much on the grammar which frightens the life out of most people as they remember grammar being something they did in school a million years ago. So confronted with that monster they seem to wilt a little.
What people need is day-to-day language, useful phrases not things like, “Does Maria have a ruler?”. “Does Maria want a beer?” might go down better.
So what about verbs?

Often, when people hear that word they want to run and hide - but they are really nothing to be scared of - in fact learning verbs gives you a 60% advantage. It is like learning half the language. Learning them in a parrot fashion can help, or even in phrases - but they need to be learned. When people tell me they want to learn Portuguese but they don’t want to learn the verbs, I tell them to speak to me in English without using a verb.
It is impossible.
Language can be like maths, if you are bad at maths don’t worry I am too and I learned Portuguese in 8 months! Half an hour to an hour study a day should get you started Also listening to music, TV, other people’s conversations and the radio, will get you on the right track. There are rules, like maths. It is all about formulas and the secret is not to ask why something is, but just to accept it is. Sometimes asking why will only hinder progress. Take a leap of faith and dive in.
Forget everything you have learned so far.
